Kitsilano

Sandwiched between English Bay’s south shore, Granville Island, and Point Grey, Kitsilano is known for its healthy inhabitants, organic-food restaurants and grocery stores, and active lifestyle. Kitsilano (nicknamed “Kits”) bustles throughout the year on busy West 4th Avenue and West Broadway shopping streets, but its most famous hub is undoubtedly Kits Beach. The swimmable, sandy oasis overlooking the North Shore mountains, Stanley Park, and West End is one of the city’s most picturesque beaches. Beautiful year-round, Kits Beach really shines—and draws a crowd—in the summer months. The Burrard Street Bridge provides quick access to downtown Vancouver and the high-density neighbourhood of apartment buildings draws a youthful crowd as well as a strong sense of community.

About Kitsilano

You’ll find Kitsilano in Vancouver’s West Side, on the south side of English Bay flanked by neighbouring communities, West Point Grey and Fairview. This neighbourhood commonly goes by “Kits” to many local residents.

This gets its name from the Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsahlano. The land is shared by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Watuth peoples, you’ll find their traditional place names on park signage.

In the 1960s Kitsilano was considered to be one of the less expensive neighbourhoods and known to be a hotbed for hippie culture. However, based on its proximity to the Downtown core, local beaches, and Granville Island, gentrification started to happen and the community began to attract more affluent residents. The Burrard Bridge has become an iconic landmark as well as a vital artery connecting Kitsilano to Downtown Vancouver.

Over the years the area of choice for some high profile professionals including David Suzuki, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Priestley, Joshua Jackson, Trevor Linden, Ryan Kesler, William Gibson, and many others.

Nearby neighbourhoods include West End, False Creek, Fairview, Shaughnessy, Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, and West Point Grey. These communities complement Kitsilano with a host of additional amenities.

Kitsilano Real Estate

The tree-lined streets set the scene for a variety of architectural styles including craftsman-style houses dating back as far as the 1910s as well as more recent contemporary-style houses and condos. Kitsilano’s craftsman-style homes feature gabled roofs and verandas and are set back from the streets. Condos and townhomes tend to be newer and showcase more modern and luxurious interiors with open layouts. It’s not uncommon to find homes and townhomes with fireplaces and outdoor space.

Being located along English Bay residents are not far from enjoying the picturesque views of the North Shore mountains and English Bay.

Kitsilano Amenities

In a neighbourhood that is well known for its marvelous beaches, variety of parks, and walkability, it comes as no surprise that Kitsilano residents enjoy spending time being active. This vibrant community is also known for annual festivals including the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Bard On The Beach, Celebration of Light, Greek Day, and many others.

Walk the streets and you’ll find quirky shops and upscale dining at restaurants such as AnnaLena, Au Comptoir, Chewies Smoke and Oyster Bar. West 4th and West Broadway are known for their retail, restaurants, and organic food markets. More retail options are available on nearby Granville Island.

Enjoying the outdoors is easy with access to well-known beaches such as Jericho Beach, Kitsilano Beach, Vanier Park, and English Bay. There is a total of 17 parks including six playgrounds, and an off-leash dog park.

The Arbutus Greenway runs through Kitsilano. It’s a 9km stretch of former railway that has been transformed into a popular bike and footpath connecting the neighbourhood to nearby communities.

Today the area has a reputation for attracting new and first-of-a-kind restaurants as well as long-standing local favourites. The Naam Cafe at 4th and Macdonald has been open since the 1960s and is one of the last remaining original businesses from the time. Also located on 4th Avenue are three of Vancouver’s first pub licenses: Bimini’s, Darby D. Dawes, and Jerry’s Cove.

Discover the H. R. MacMillan Space Centre and the Museum of Vancouver located in Vanier Park. Vanier Park also features an open-air amphitheater with a stunning backdrop of Vancouver.
