Downtown Vancouver

As the beating heart of the city, downtown Vancouver is a bustling area that offers ample recreational opportunities, cultural and social activities, and exciting nightlife. Centered on Granville Street, which runs right through the region, downtown Vancouver is known for its excellent location, its diversity, and its fun, welcoming atmosphere, all of which make it one of Canada’s most desirable places to live. Vancouver Real Estate

Real estate in Vancouver encompasses a wide range of both home types and styles. Downtown Vancouver is one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, with Gastown being the area’s first settlement in the late-19th century.

The city has maintained many of the historic buildings, yet the landscape of downtown Vancouver is always changing rapidly. There are a range of homes for sale to choose from, for a wide range of budgets. These include both strata-titled townhomes and sky-high luxury condominiums right on the waterfront. Condominiums take up most of the downtown area, while the surrounding neighbourhoods offer more in terms of townhomes and single-family homes.

The area in and of itself is extraordinarily desirable because it combines the fast-paced city life with the natural beauty of Vancouver: mountain and ocean views, and large green spaces interspersed within the city’s most urban areas.

The city has also focused on developing long-term affordable housing and sustainability initiatives, which seek to make Vancouver real estate accessible to families and young people, and to reduce the city’s negative environmental impact.

Vancouver Highlights and Attractions

Combining views of the city, mountains, and Pacific Ocean, downtown Vancouver is already a highly-desirable place to live. However, the city is also known for its happening arts and culture scene, great restaurants and shopping, and, of course, the plethora of outdoor spaces to enjoy.

Downtown Vancouver is located close to Stanley Park and English Bay—great destinations for taking an evening stroll or an afternoon dip. Those who love to hike, bike, walk, jog, and hang out by the water will find the downtown area the perfect place to be.

The downtown core is also lined with shops: both high street and luxury boutiques. The Pacific Centre is the area’s shopping hub, but one can also take a walk down Robson Street and Granville Street for more shopping opportunities.

Other attractions in the area include Science World, which is an exciting experience for both the young, and the young at heart. Those who are already strolling down by the water will also enjoy Canada Place, which is recognizable for its giant sails on the roof. And of course, BC Place, Vancouver’s stadium, is a great place to catch a concert or cheer on your favourite sports team.

Downtown Vancouver also houses the Vancouver campuses for Simon Fraser University (SFU), British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), and The University of British Columbia (UBC).

Getting Around Vancouver

Downtown Vancouver, and by extension the entire Vancouver area, has an extensive public transport system that is easy and accessible.

If landing at Vancouver International Airport, the SkyTrain will easily take you to the downtown Vancouver area directly in less than 30 minutes. The SkyTrain, with its several lines, also connects the downtown area to Burnaby, Surrey, and many other regions.

Vancouver also has an extensive bus system that will take you anywhere around the city. Of course, travel by car is also easy, with Granville Bridge connecting downtown Vancouver with Granville Island, South Granville, and other areas. Lion’s Gate Bridge or Iron Works Memorial Bridge are both options to access North Vancouver. Express bus routes are also available that can take you to Whistler, leaving from Burrard Station.

If North Vancouver is your destination, the SeaBus shuttles passengers from the downtown Vancouver waterfront to North Vancouver and back, every 15 minutes.
